Nova Scotia’s The Stogies and Newfoundland’s Long Distance Runners are teaming up for what promises to be one of the best tours of Atlantic Canadian this summer.
These two hard-working bands are known for their flat-out rock and roll shows. The Runnin’ On Fumes Tour begins in Moncton on June 6th and ends in St. John’s on July 17th. Along the way, they play The Seahorse (with Young River) on June 14th.
The Stogies are Blake Johnston (vocals/guitar), Dave Driscoll (guitar/vocal), Sean Carver (bass), Jason Keddy (keys/organ) and Dave Lidstone of GUFF Magazine (drums). The Stogies have one hard-hitting 5-song EP No Couth, No Class, No Nothin’ released in 2011.
The Stogies have toured extensively over their past year and their live show is full of wailing vocals, loud guitars and sweeping organ, underpinned by a thunderous rhythm section.
Long Distance Runners
Long Distance Runners began in 2009 and were born from the musical friendship of singer-songwriter Chris Picco (who just released his debut solo album The Beach) and bassist Matt Herder. Besides Picco and Herder, LDR consists of Dicky Strickland (an exceptional guitarist), Ryan Kennedy (keyboards) and Josh Bourden (drums).
The Long Distance Runners have a 5 song self-titled EP (2010) and a full-length debut LP Tracks (2012). Tracks earned the band a 2013 ECMA nomination for Rock Recording of the Year. My introduction to Long Distance Runners was in 2010 when I was looking for some new music at Fred’s Records in St. John’s. At the time, respected St. John’s musician Steve Hussey recommended the Long Distance Runners EP and I am glad he did. Long Distance Runners are a professional band (in every sense of the word). Their live performances showcase their catchy melodies, perfect harmonies and fantastic musicianship.
This is one show not to be missed.
