Frequent readers of this blog will know that RiaMae is one of my favourite artists. Period.
It’s been a few months since I’ve seen Ria play live, so when I heard she was playing The Carleton on September 29th, I was pretty excited. I also saw that Ria was playing with ChrisVelan – a name unfamiliar to me. So, I had to check out his music…and I’m glad I did. Velan has just released (and is touring in support of) his fifth full-length album titled The Long Goodbye. Velan & Mae head out for a Canada/USA tour from September 25 – November 9. See the full list of tour dates at the bottom of this post.
Chris Velan
Montreal-born singer/songwriter Chris Velan has drawn comparisons to Paul Simon for his West African-influenced folk/pop. He has toured extensively through North America over the past decade with notable performances at the Sundance Festival, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Montreal International Jazz Festival. He’s currently touring in support of his newly released fifth album, The Long Goodbye, which the Toronto Star has called “compulsive and compelling”.
Ria Mae
Ria Mae has had an outstanding run with the release of her debut full-length album, Under Your Skin, produced by Asif Illyas (MIR). Under Your Skin won the 2012 East Coast Music Award for Pop Recording of the Year, Ria was a finalist for the International Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, and was also the Regional Winner and National Runner-up for the 2012 Canada-wide Radio Star Contest.
Ria collaborated with hip hop heavyweight Classified to produce Leaving Today. The song debuted on Top 40 radio stations across the country, and was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2013 ECMAs.
