Like Halifax, Hamilton Ontario is home to some great musical talent. This past year alone, I have been introduced to the music of Dana Swarbrick, The Dinner Belles, Jordan Haller, Marie Avery, Weekend Riot Club and Toui Manikhouth. Sarah Beatty is another one of those fine Hamilton-based artists.
Beatty, who is working toward the completion of her PhD in Environmental Science at McMaster University, released her debut sole album, Black Gramophone, in May of 2012. That album was nominated for Roots Recording of the Year (Hamilton Music Awards).
Beatty’s music has been described as “stompy country blues, haunting ballads, humorous protest songs, and groove oriented acoustic folk music made from mellow afternoons and key lime pie….and all fittingly wrapped in soaring, dynamic vocals and clever lyrics”.
Beatty is in the midst of a tour with Shawn William Clarke that takes them through the Maritimes from October 1st – 8th. On Thursday, October 2nd the tour stops in Halifax for a show at The Company House starting at 8:30 pm.
